Description
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is an endogenous 28-residue neuropeptide broadly expressed in the central and peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and immune tissues. It signals through VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors (G protein-coupled, Gs-coupled) to elevate intracellular cAMP, producing effects that include smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation, immunomodulation, and circadian rhythm regulation. Preclinical research has examined VIP extensively in models of inflammatory bowel disease, pulmonary hypertension, neuroinflammation, and autoimmune pathology, where its potent anti-inflammatory actions on macrophage and T-cell cytokine production have been characterized.
