Description
Glutathione (L-γ-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine; GSH) is a ubiquitous tripeptide synthesized intracellularly and maintained at millimolar concentrations in virtually all mammalian cells. As the principal non-enzymatic antioxidant, it functions as an essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzyme families, neutralizing reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, and participating in phase II detoxification of electrophilic xenobiotics.
