Description

SS-31, also known as elamipretide or MTP-131, is a tetrapeptide (D-Arg-2’6-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) that selectively localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane through electrostatic interactions with the phospholipid cardiolipin. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that SS-31 stabilizes cristae architecture, reduces electron leak at Complexes I and III, and decreases reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under conditions of metabolic stress. These properties have made it a widely referenced research tool in models of ischemia-reperfusion injury, aging-associated mitochondrial dysfunction, and energetic decline in post-mitotic tissue.
